dad braisherThe history of the Green Bay Packers and the Unified School District of De Pere dates back more than 80 years, when long-time De Pere High School coach G.E. “Dad” Braisher (left) also served as the Packers equipment manager. Braisher is said to have had a hand in creating the Packers’ logo as well.

In 2012, the team established the Packers Heritage Trail, a series of marked historical sites in De Pere and Green Bay that reflect the lives and livelihoods of Packers’ teams, coaches and players, including Braisher.  When De Pere teacher Chris Hendricks was looking for an opportunity for his students to produce a virtual reality (VR) project from start to finish, the Trail was a natural choice.

“VR combines digital photography, video, audio and more to create a life-like experience for users,” says Hendricks. “With its variety of locations, buildings, and detailed signage-- much of which is in or related to De Pere--  the Trail offered many features the students could capture and compile into a VR project. Plus, our tour is narrated by Packers’ Historian Cliff Christl who probably knows more about the Packers and the Trail sites than anyone.”

Hendricks says the students did just about everything from taking 360 degree photos and other digital camera images, as well as video, and compiling the content using Google’s Tour Creator app.  Josh Gauthier, De Pere Tech Integration Coach, provided technical assistance throughout the process.

After nearly a year of work, the VR tour is ready for public viewing.

“We’re excited to share this with the community,” he says. “Especially for those who can’t physically walk to all the Trail locations it’s a different way to enjoy the experience. And it was truly a learning opportunity for the students to work with high-end technology, to gain a better understanding of our local history and to produce something that can be enjoyed by others.”
